EU supports Trump’s ultimatum to Russia
On Monday, Trump expressed frustration with the stalled negotiations, warning Russia of “severe” secondary tariffs of up to 100% if progress toward a settlement is not made.
“It’s very positive that President Trump is taking a tough position on Russia,” Kallas said during a press conference. Known for her hardline stance on Moscow, she added that Trump’s 50-day timeline might not be sufficient to apply real pressure.
“Fifty days is quite a long time... It’s clear we all need to increase pressure on Russia so it also seeks peace,” Kallas stated, urging continued US military support for Ukraine.
Moscow has repeatedly condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing they only prolong the conflict without altering its outcome. Russia has also labeled Western sanctions illegal under international law.
Russia and Ukraine have recently held two rounds of direct negotiations in Istanbul, agreeing to major prisoner swaps and exchanging proposals for a possible settlement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Russia remains open to dialogue but has not yet received word from Kiev on when talks might resume.
Peskov described Trump’s ultimatum as “quite serious” but said Moscow needs time to fully assess it. He also warned that Washington’s tougher rhetoric might be interpreted by Kiev not as encouragement for peace but as a signal to continue fighting.
